Mazalan Kamis President and Executive Director

Mazalan Kamis is a post-doctoral fellow at Cornell University. He is an
educator by profession and enjoys learning from the people that he
teaches. He is very passionate about helping to create better awareness
and understanding about the world among the people in his community. He
has long been interested in community development issues, especially
those that relate to education. He developed a special interest in Aceh
ever since he learned about the political conflicts in the region. His
other project is geared towards educating women in Malaysia about breast

Saiful Mahdi
Vice President and Community Service Director

Saiful Mahdi is a Ph.D. student at Cornell University. He is on
study-leave from the Syiah Kuala University in Aceh, where he has been a
lecturer in the Department of Mathematics since 1993. He has received
prestigious scholarships from Fullbright and the Asian Development
Bank. He is one of the co-founders of Reading Society Foundation (www.acehkids.org)
which is working on literacy projects by providing books and community
libraries. He founded and co-chairs the Phi-Beta Learning Center in
Banda Aceh, of which with the support from ARF is now a full non-profit
organization.
His tsunami relief work receive due recognition by a UN agency,
UNIFEM,
which subsequently appoints him as National Programme Coordinator in
Aceh. |

Zevi Azzaino
Treasurer, Planning and IT Director

Zevi Azzaino is a Ph.D. candidate at Cornell University, specializing in
Combinatorial Optimization and Environmental Modeling. He has been a
guest lecturer in Geographic Information System courses at Cornell, and voluntareers his GIS expertise by creating maps and satellite images for
ARF. He has received several scholarship awards for academic excellence,
including from the Asian Development Bank, Cornell's Institute for
Social and Economic Research, Institute for Public Affairs, and
Intelligent Information Systems Institute. |

Sorayya Khan
Secretary and Executive Secretary

Sorayya Khan did her graduate work at the University of Denver in
International Studies, taking particular interest in development work
and issues regarding refugees. She writes fiction and is the author of
the novel, Noor. She was a Fulbright Creative Writing Scholar in
Pakistan and Bangladesh in 1999-2000 and was the 1995 Malahat Review
Novella Prize Winner. Her work has appeared in several literary
quarterlies and various anthologies of Pakistani writing.

Peggy Robinson
Outreach Director

Peggy Robinson works for the Ithaca schools as an English as a Second
Language (ESL) Family Liaison. Her work brings together lifelong
interests in the value of cross cultural education and experiences. She
holds a BA from Occidental College and a MA from the University of
Texas, both in Latin American Studies. For nearly 40 years she has been
affiliated with AFS International Scholarships as an exchange student,
host sister, and host mother. as a wife and mother, she has participated
in study and living experiences in the Andes. Her community
service activities include serving on the board of
Historic Ithaca
(1997-2000).
Currently, she enjoys relationships begun as a sponsor of refugees from
Cuba, Bosnia, and Burma. |
